Bequeath Shawl - Handspun Lichenology

$554.00

2+ meter shawl with entirely HANDSPUN weft, hemstitching, faux lace, and twisted fringe

Warp is handdyed longstaple Egyptian Cotton - one of my very favorite fibers to work with! Wefts are merino/tussah silk/flax plied with sewing thread and Jacob wool.

~

The Bequeath collection is a meditation on what we, collectively, leave to our children and great-grand-children in the context of climate crisis.  The warp is dyed in colors that reflect the land we live upon.  The large-scale network twill is a visual representation of the vast and interconnected global climate systems that are slowly hurtling us towards a very different experience of life on earth.

As the parent of young children, I am live in joyful awe of their lives and potential while recognizing my own culpability in standing by as their world is on the way to irrevocable change.  I waffle between despair and optimism and anxiety.  This collection is my reaffirmation that multiple things can be true at the same time:

We broke the world AND life is beautiful.

We broke the world AND we can help it heal.

We broke the world AND my children’s future is worth fighting for.

~

The weft that is in the inset framed by hemstitching is a 2 ply Jacob wool in a natural undyed grey. It evokes granite boulders, weathered by millennia and home to infinitudes of lichen. The main weft is one of my favorite milled blends merino/tussah/flax dyed by @inglenookfibers in the Lichenology colorway. It evokes the slow growing lichen that spreads over weathered rocks. Lichen is sensitive to the changing ph and temperatures caused by our current climate crisis and yet the impact is not always visible or easily measured because of the centuries that measure the life span of this slow growing symbiote.
