Cerridwen is a Goddess from the Celtic pantheon. She is a goddess of rebirth, magic, wisdom, and creative inspiration. She is associated with the moon, fertility, science, poetry, and prophecy. She was the keeper of the cauldron of rebirth. Medieval Welsh poetry refers to her as possessing the cauldron of poetic inspiration (Awen). Her tale is recorded in the Mabinogian, a collection of ancient Welsh lore set down in the early 1300's. An enchantress from Welsh mythology, Cerridwen is regarded as a woman of incredible power and magic. She pervades Welsh and Irish culture as an emblem of wisdom and rebirth as well as of inspiration. As a woman of fierce magical talent and also a mother, Cerridwen's written story in the Mabinogian is interestingly less about herself and more about the children she bore and the ways she protected them.
Hawks are sacred to her and she shapeshifted into one as part of her pursuit of Taliesin. The weave on this piece is inspired by a hawk's feathers.
